The Sunk Cost Fallacy: Resurrection Podcast (Ep. 4)

"I can't leave her. We've been together for 10 years."

"I can't close the business. I've poured my life savings into it."

You tell yourself this is loyalty. You tell yourself this is grit. You are lying.

You are suffering from the Sunk Cost Fallacy.

It is the irrational belief that you must keep investing in a failing situation just because you have already paid for it. You are rationalizing your fear of the unknown by clinging to a dead asset.

In Episode 4 of The Resurrection Podcast, we break down why staying in a dead marriage or a bleeding business isn't noble; it is financial and spiritual suicide.

The Bad Investor

Imagine you bought a car for $50,000. Two weeks later, the engine blows up. The mechanic says it will cost $10,000 to fix it, but the car will never run right again.

Do you pay the $10,000 just because you already spent $50,000? No. That would make you $60,000 poorer for a car that is still broken.

Yet, men do this with their lives every single day.

  • "I've already put 5 years into this relationship."

  • "I've already put 10 years into this career."

The 5 years you spent? They are gone. The money you lost? It is ash.

You cannot get the past back by burning your future.

Quitting vs. Amputation

The biggest fear men have is being called a Quitter. But there is a difference between Quitting and Strategic Amputation.

  • Quitting is when you stop because it is hard. That is weakness.

  • Amputation is when you stop because the limb is rotting. That is survival.

If you stay in a toxic situation just to prove you "aren't a quitter," you are letting the infection spread to your heart.

The Zero-Base Question

How do you know if it's time to cut the rope? You ask the Zero-Base Question.

Look at your relationship, your job, or your business. Strip away the history. Strip away the time you invested. Ask yourself:

"Knowing what I know now, would I start this today?"

  • Would I hire this employee today?

  • Would I start dating this woman today?

  • Would I take this job today?

If the answer is NO, then staying is not loyalty. It is a lie.
